Work to start on revamp of practice nets

Work is due to start on the revamp of our practice nets next month

Work is due to start on a revamp of the club’s practice nets on Monday, April 10.

The project should be completed and the nets back in action within five days.

The work, costing several thousand pounds, is being funded by an ECB loan (and is subject to the money coming through on time).

The club are currently applying for grants to cover the loan.

We have already been allocated at least £1,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme.

That sum could rise to £5,000 if the club polls the most votes in the supermarket’s shoppers’ ballot.

Refurbished practice nets, and a coach to help improve performances on the pitch, were the two priorities identified at a players’ meeting in January.

The club are delighted to deliver on both before the start of the 2017 season.

Tesco Bags of Help

Vote for new nets for Bredon Cricket Club whenever you visit Tesco at Bishop’s Cleeve, near Cheltenham, or in Evesham.

The branch is one of those taking part in Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, in which grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – are awarded to community projects.

Other local projects vying for funding are Cheltenham Rugby Club, who are seeking funding for a multi-use games area, and an organisation (unknown) building an outdoor learning centre.

They are both worthwhile projects, but we really want to win the £5,000 top award (we are at least guaranteed a £1,000 grant).

That is why we need your help. Please vote for Bredon Cricket Club whenever you do your shopping in Tesco, Bishop’s Cleeve, or Evesham.

You will be given a token when you pay at the check-out. You can then drop it into the appropriate transparent ballot box (see picture above, and thanks to Glenn Buckley for providing it!).

Online customers can take their customer delivery note into store and show it to a member of staff , who will then provide a voting token.

We are hoping to receive more information from Tesco about which other branches in our area are taking part in the Bags of Help scheme.

Club pays tribute to stalwart Dave Bettridge

Dave Bettridge, Bredon Cricket Club stalwart
Stalwart Dave Bettridge, pictured with his grandson, Alex, has died at the age of 76

It is with great sadness that we have learnt that former Bredon Cricket Club player, umpire, committee member and stalwart Dave Bettridge passed away last Friday aged 76 following a short but cruel illness.

Dave played for the club from the late 1970s and was instrumental in bringing us to our beautiful Westmancote home in 1989.

When he finally hung up his bowling boots Dave would be found on most summer Saturdays on the boundary edge, as passionate about the game as a spectator as he was as a player.

He would also come along on a Friday evenings to proudly watch his grandson be part of the junior practice, and he took great delight in overcoming Dumbleton… even at Under 9s!

Dave will be remembered and sadly missed by all at Bredon Cricket Club.

There will be a private funeral for close family members next week.

On Saturday, March 4, from 2pm in the clubhouse at Hill Close anyone who knew Dave is welcome to join the family and friends to celebrate his life and have a drink in his name.

Volunteers hard at work during CricketForce Day 2016

Bredon Cricket Club needs your help!

Volunteers are needed at the start of every season to get our clubhouse and pitch at Hill Close ready for the new season.

People from the local community as well as club members are invited to join the big clean-up, which is called CricketForce Day 2017.

It is a national initiative backed by NatWest bank and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Last year’s CricketForce Day at Bredon was a huge success and formed the foundation for a fabulous year of improvements at the club. You can see our Facebook photo album of the event here.

This year CricketForce Day will be on Sunday, April 2, at Hill Close.

The hard work begins at 10am, and there will be tea, coffee and bacon rolls to help get you going!

Martyn Draper is once again organising the work, and will be delighted to welcome you to the club.

No expertise is needed; just a willingness to get stuck in!

The subscription for junior players (10 to 17) is £20.

The cost for Friday evening coaching sessions for five to 10-year-olds is £10 a child, and a least one parent/carer is expected to take out a social membership of the club.

Social memberships cost £10 a year, and include access to our friendly, refurbished clubhouse which boasts TV and highly competitive bar prices.

Our subs remain among the lowest of sports clubs in the area, and your fees are helping to make Bredon a success on and off the field.
