On a warm and sunny evening Bredon Under 12s visited Elmley Castle in a local derby for the 2017 plate final of the Under 13s Cotswold Hills League.

The home side won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.

On a slow-paced wicket offering some variable bounce for the bowlers, Bredon batted with patience and restraint and kept the scoreboard moving by attacking any loose bowling.

Positive running between the wickets was also a feature of the innings, and the visitors finished on 273-2 after 16 overs, a good total considering how well Elmley bowled, conceding only 5 wides during the innings.

The home side found themselves under pressure in the run chase, losing a couple of early wickets and being held back by some tight bowling and excellent fielding.

The final Elmley batting pair needed to score 25 runs for victory, but Bredon held their nerve, bowling four great overs at the death.

A smart run out and a fine catch restricted the home side’s final total to 258-7, Bredon winning by 15 runs.

This was a fine all-round team performance from the Under 12s, and capped a successful season for the team, who have made great progress since May and have won six of their 10 matches played.

Bredon Under 12s through to Cotswold Hills League plate final

Bredon Under 12s have made it to the 2017 plate final in the Cotswold Hills Under 13s competition following two knock-out victories last week.

Following a rained off fixture the previous Sunday, Bredon welcomed Cookhill to Hill Close on Wednesday evening.

The visitors won the toss and asked Bredon to bat, and the home side responded by posting an imposing 302-2, with circumspect defence and positive running between the wickets a feature of what was the team’s best batting performance of the season.

Cookhill batted well in their reply, but were held back by tight bowling and fielding from the Under 12s and finished up on 250-7.

Then, on a warm and sunny first Sunday in July, Ashton-under-Hill were welcomed as the visitors for the semi-final.

In a well-contested local derby, Bredon were once again put into bat, and continued the form from earlier in the week by reaching a score of 300-1.

For a time Ashton were up with the rate, but Bredon held their nerve and bowled and fielded with great skill in the second half of the innings to restrict the visitors to 236-6 and make it to their first final.

The plate final is on Sunday, July 16. Venue and opponents to be arranged.

Bredon 318 for 5
Alcester and Ragley 238 for 9

The Under 13s are through to the 2017 Cotswold Hills League semi-final after a convincing 80-run home win over Alcester and Ragley.

The boys batted first with such confidence, taking the bowling apart and keeping the run rate ticking over with great running between the wickets.

The team scored their highest total for the season.

They came out to field in high spirits, with a great opening attack taking early wickets to put the visitors on the back foot with some great catching skills.

They stuck at it, not losing focus on the job in hand and securing the semi-final position.

Well done to the Under 13s, who played as a confident team with plenty of enjoyment and focus.

A proud morning’s cricket as a coach.

Bredon Cricket Club are delighted to have engaged the services of top coach Andy Stovold.

He will be helping our junior players develop their batting during our Friday evening coaching sessions.

According to his Wikipedia entry, Andy was “a dependable right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper who represented Gloucestershire (1973–1990), Marylebone Cricket Club (1976) and Orange Free State (1974/75–1975/76).

“He was a regular opening partner for the Test batsman Sadiq Mohammad and he also kept wicket until the emergence of  Jack Russell.

“He was awarded his county cap in 1976 and a benefit in 1987. He joined the county’s coaching staff upon retirement.

“Since 2010, he has been head coach of the University of Bristol Cricket Club, alongside other coaching commitments.”

Andy took part in his first coaching session at Hill Close last Friday (June 23).

His expertise is an addition to the positive impact club coach Tom Walsingham has had on playing standards at Hill Close since his arrival this season.

Bretforton were too strong for Bredon Under 12s today.

The home side, batting first, posted 247 for seven on a blisteringly hot morning.

But after an unfortunate run of slip-ups, Bredon could only manage 220 for 10 in reply.

Ups and downs mark busy week for Under 12s

Old Elizabethans
Bredon Under 12s, pictured after a match earlier this season, have had a week of ups and downs

An update on a busy week for the Under 12s with three matches in the Cotswold Hills Under 13s league.

Last Sunday (June 4) the team visited a strong Elmley Castle side, with the home side coming out on top with a clear 50-run victory.

The Under 12s bounced back well the following Wednesday evening against Ashton-under-Hill when in rain at Hill Close they secured a 15-run victory, chasing down the visitors’ 263-4 with a score of 278, also for the loss of four wickets.

On Sunday,  June 11, the team welcomed Dumbleton Lions to Hill Close, and having asked the visitors to bat first restricted them to 242-6 with their best bowling and fielding performance of the season.

Unfortunately, the batting did not reach the same standards and the loss of nine wickets restricted the score to 240, leaving Bredon just two runs short of their target in a very well contested game between two evenly matched sides.

A solid performance. Well done, boys.

Tough going for Under 11s on artificial wicket

It was tough going for the Under 11s on the artificial wicket at Ashton-under-Hill today.

Bowling with very little bounce, the boys nevertheless notched up a 260-225 win against their near neighbours thanks to a combination of patient batting and accurate bowling.
