Bredon Cricket Club celebrated the achievements of its young players with a fun day at Hill Close.
There was a Kwik Cricket match for the under 9s and a club match for under 11s, 12s and 13s.
Families turned out in numbers, despite the overcast weather.
The clubhouse bar was busy, and there were eager queues for hot dogs and burgers at the barbecue. Tea, coffee and cakes were also on sale.
It was the culmination of a terrific season for the club’s junior cricketers. All have made fabulous progress this year. The Under 9s won a festival at Dumbleton while the Over 12s reached the Cotswold League Shield final.
Well done to all the youngsters and their parents/carers.
Sorry, everyone, but tomorrow’s junior cricket coaching session (Friday, September 2) is cancelled.
Don’t worry, though, the youngsters will not be missing out on their sport this weekend; there will be matches galore at our Family Fun Day at Hill Close on Sunday (September 4).
There will be Kwik Cricket for under 9s, and a club match for under 11, under 12 and under 13 players.
The clubhouse bar will be open, and there will be a barbecue with a free hotdog and burger for all junior players.
With the end of the season approaching, Bredon Cricket Club is organising a fun day to thank all our young players (and their parents/carers) for their superb efforts this summer.
It will be held on Sunday, September 4, at Hill Close and the format will be as follows:
From 12.30pm:Kwik Cricket match for all under 9s (children who were in school years three and four). We will set up on the junior square and play a pairs match of 8/10/12 per side (the same format as our competition earlier in the season).
From 1pm: Barbecue with a free hot dog or burger for all junior club members.
From 2pm: Club match for all under 11s, under 12s and under 13s players. We are likely to play pairs of 10-a-side, but may need to play 12-a-side depending on the turnout.
The clubhouse bar will be open all afternoon during the fun day, and there will be a cash barbecue for all non-players.
All under 7s junior members are welcome to come along for a free hot dog and to play mini-cricket matches.
For parents/carers it will be an opportunity to relax, enjoy a drink in beautiful surroundings and swap summer holiday stories!
Bredon Under 12s’ progress to the Cotswold Hills League shield final was marked by coverage in the local press.
The Evesham Journal carried a large picture-story about the match against Alcester and Ragley, which was played at Evesham Cricket Club.
Unfortunately, the game ended in defeat for Bredon, but just reaching the final was testament to the hard work put in by the boys and their coach, Mark Notley, over the season.
Bredon’s Under 11s cruised to victory in a friendly against an under-strength Tewkesbury at Hill Close this morning.
The home side scored 286 to the visitors’ 203, losing just three wickets along the way.
The Under 11s, who were also missing some regulars, were bolstered by Sam Wilson from the Under 9s and John Darby, who was making his competitive debut for Bredon.
Bredon’s highlights included a wicket from Ben Vicarage (bowled and caught), some cracking deliveries from Euan Styles, and solid battling from Harry Buckley, George Gallagher, Max Murray and Tolly Wilson.
Captain for the match Charlie Cooper correctly called tails and asked to field first, explaining confidently that “we like to chase”.
Playing 10-a-side with five batting pairs, Bredon’s bowling was not at its very best, but still effective, and wickets fell regularly through the Harvington innings.
This, plus a very energetic and skilful fielding performance contained the home side to 233 from their 20 overs.
James Collins was the pick for Bredon; fast, straight and full, he bowed a miserly spell of three overs for no runs with three wickets.
All five batting pairs made a positive contribution to the Bredon total, with a more circumspect approach than in recent weeks ensuring only a few wickets were conceded.
Despite resisting the temptation to smash every ball, the scoreboard still rattled along, with many playing scoring boundaries.
Special mention goes to Tom Washbourne, who showed his older team mates the way by batting carefully but still striking two sumptuous fours.
The final word was left to George and Tolly who, batting last, put Bredon out of reach.
A tremendous over saw Tolly smash the very first six of the season and follow up with two further boundaries, leaving Bredon on 285, and comfortable winners.
A very big thank-you to Trevor and all the parents at Harvington for hosting the fixture and providing fantastic hospitality.
The hot dogs at the end of the game were delicious and we hope to return the favour next season.
There was disappointment for Bredon’s plucky Under 12s, who lost out to Alcester and Ragley in the Cotswold Hills League shield final on Sunday.
The boys, who have been playing a year up all season, struggled to cope with their opponents’ superior bowling.
Alcester and Ragley finished winners with a score of 277 for 3 after a match played in brilliant sunshine at Evesham cricket ground.
Alcester and Ragley won the toss and elected to bowl, taking an early wicket with their second ball.
Bredon fought back with several boundaries from Ollie McGrath and some quick running between the wickets by Cole Notley. They ended their total after four overs at 229 for 2.
Alcester and Ragley took four wickets in quick succession, chipping away at Bredon’s total.
Bredon’s William Wilson and Eashan Patel deployed an array of defensive shots to keep the opposition’s accurate bowlers from taking more precious runs away from the total.
The third pair, Reuben Pawley and Luke Plane, fought back hard, putting the pressure back on Alcester and Ragley’s bowlers.
The last pair came to the crease with the score at 235 for 8 needing a successful four overs.
Reuben Ibbotson smashed two early boundaries to boost the Bredon’s total and confidence, but Alcester and Ragley bowled beautifully at the stumps to fight back with two quick wickets.
Dylan Simmonds played some lovely strokes at the other end to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Reuben finished off with a further two big hits, finishing Bredon on 253 for 11.
It was a terrific bowling and fielding display.
Alcester and Ragley took to the crease looking confident and ending their first four overs 220 for no wicket.
Dylan Simmonds struck first for Bredon with a first-ball wicket.
Alcester and Ragley pulled back with great batting and determination, raising the total to 244 for 2.
Reuben Pawley got Bredon’s second wicket.
Alcester took the driving seat, adding runs with ease over the next four overs before Luke Plane hit the stumps to give Bredon a boost.
Alcester took the lead at 269 for 3, with Bredon needing wickets to win.
William Wilson, Cole Notley and Rueben Ibbotson bowled tight, only conceding four runs off the bat.
A big thanks to both teams for a great final that was played at a high standard with great sportsmanship.
Thanks also to Mark Dixon, Jon Bassett and his wife for making the day a success as always, with the use of the great facilities.
