Bredon Cricket Club’s Under 15s and Under 13s sides (with some extras thrown in) met for a 20-over friendly match at a blustery Hill Close this evening.

The younger players batted first and soon put a decent figure on the scoreboard. With wickets to spare they could have battled even more adventurously, but in the end settled for 111.

The Under 15s were unsettled by some good bowling and fielding, and with the evening temperature falling rapidly could not match the tempo set by their opponents, posting a total of 63 runs.

Bredon Cricket Club triumphed over Bredon AFC in a 20-over friendly at Hill Close this afternoon.

The cricketers, batting first, posted 128, while the footballers were all out for 108.

The fixture was played in its usual good spirit, and there was a lively crowd of spectators.

Last year’s fixture ended in a two-wicket victory for the football club.

We should have some action pictures from the match later.

  • Today’s Under 12s game against Cookhill was rained off and will be replayed.

Balmy evening of cricket on summer solstice

On a sweltering day at Hill Close, Bredon batted first and posted 160 in this summer solstice 20-over friendly.

Alderton Wanderers could only manage 100 in reply, despite some fine batting.

Spectators enjoyed an idyllic evening of cricket in beautiful surroundings

But there wasn’t a strawberry in sight.

There is a chance to enjoy the thrills of Twenty20 cricket on the longest day at Bredon Cricket Club this week.

The club are marking the summer solstice with a friendly match against neighbours Alderton Wanderers.

The action at Hill Close starts at 6pm on Wednesday (June 21), and given the current balmy weather we are all set for a wonderful evening.

Spectators are most welcome.

Our clubhouse bar will be open throughout the match serving draught beer, lager, spirits, soft drinks and wine (including Prosecco) by the bottle or glass.

But please feel free to bring your own food, perhaps some strawberries to share, and enjoy a relaxing few hours of cricket at our attractive ground with its glorious views of Bredon Hill.

  • Watch out, too, for Bredon Hill’s own Twenty20 cricket tournament in August, when four local teams will battle it out for honours in the Bredon Hill Bash.

Bredon return to winning ways with victory over Wormelow

An emphatic win over Wormelow ruturned the First XI to winning ways
An emphatic win over Wormelow returned the First XI to winning ways

Bredon First XI returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Wormelow at Hill Close.

Wormelow were 194 for eight at the end of their innings, but Bredon overhauled them at the cost of just four wickets.

The win puts last week’s loss (their first of the season) against Chaddesley Corbett behind them and leaves the side second in Worcestershire County League’s Division Two (First XI), six points behind Evesham.

It was also a good day for the Second XI, who won by seven wickets away at Halesowen.

The Third XI, the club’s development team, lost at home to Bewdley. The visitors reached a target of 131, revised because of poor weather, at a cost of just two wickets. The match was a valuable opportunity for two young Bredon players, Joe Hunt and Luke Plain, to get their first taste of senior cricket.

Bredon First XI continue winning ways

Bredon’s First claimed their fifth successive win today with victory over Bromyard

The First XI cemented their place at the top of Worcestershire County League’s Division Two today with a home win against Bromyard.

With the hosts posting 263 for 8 in dull, blustery conditions, Bromyard failed to respond, ending the match all out for 152.

It was Bredon’s fifth successive victory (last week’s match against Coombes Wood was rained off, and they are now 11 points clear of second placed Evesham.

A special mention for Kevin Wilkins’s mother-in-law who stepped in at the last minute to provide tea for the teams.

Her efforts was greatly appreciated by the players and tea rota organiser Lucy Washbourne.

Meanwhile, it was a tougher day for the Thirds.

The opposition was too strong for a home team missing a couple of regular players.

They batted first, posting 137, but were beaten by nine wickets at Birlingham.

Thirds surprise Taverners with sting in their tail

Wallop! Johnny McGrath with another powerful hit for the Thirds

A sting in the Third XI’s tail was not enough to secure a win against Ombersley Taverners today.

The Thirds, playing through showers at their home ground at Birlingham, posted 163 at the end of their innings.

There was a standout performance from Johnny McGrath, who batting at number nine, unsettled the Taverners by hitting 56 before being caught out on the last ball of the innings.

Ruben Ibbotson also enjoyed a fine spell of bowling, claiming four wickets.

Oliver Washbourne, who bowled eight good overs, also impressed.

Bredon contained several young players (the opposition were all adults), who would have been inspired by the guidance and very vocal encouragement from senior players, in particular, skipper Russell Collins.

First-round cup defeat as Bredon Third XI warm up for season

The Third XI bowed out of a cup competition at the first round at Birlingham today.

Bredon battled first, leaving Feckenham needing 103 to win, which they achieved with six wickets to spare.

It was a good warm-up match for the Thirds, though, who start their season in earnest with a match against Ombersley Taverners First XI next Saturday.

The First XI’s terrific start to the season continued with a home win against Belbroughton, Bredon winning with eight wickets to spare.

The Second XI enjoyed their first win of the season, posting 103 for 3 after Alvechurch and Hopwood were all out for 99.
