Son catches dad, then dad catches son!

Bob Portch: Caught by his son, Henry. But he then returned the favour!

Like father, like son!

There was no intention of revenge when Bob Portch, playing for Bredon Veterans, was caught by his son Henry.

Nevertheless, when it came it must have been sweet.

Bob, who had been battling at nine for the Veterans, said (only slightly begrudgingly): “He caught what was probably the bet shot I’d hit for six years!”

But he didn’t have long to wait before turning the tables.

When it was Henry’s turn to go in to bat, opening as a guest player for the Fossils, guess who caught him? His dad!

Henry, who at 17 years old substantially lowered the average age of the Worcester-based Fossils, had been roped in to play because the side were short of players for their friendly against Bredon Veterans.

One thing’s for sure. Neither he or his dad could be accused of going easy on the opposition!

Assured batting puts Bredon in driving seat against Kidderminster

Catch! Jamie Munro helps pin back Kidderminster

An assured batting display helped Bredon to victory over Kidderminster at Hill Close today.

The home side went to bat first on a glorious sunny day with a steady breeze helping to keep the players cool.

Johnny McGrath scored 60 runs, Simon Booth 54 and Simon Riches 47, a total that put Bredon’s Second XI in the driving seat against Kidderminster’s Fourths.

Later, a catch by Jamie Munro caught the eye and helped pin back the visitors.

Bredon finished 240 for 6, against Kidderminster’s 190 for 7.

Bredon Under 11s cruise to victory over Tewkesbury

In control. Bredon cruised to a win over an under-strength Tewkesbury side

Bredon’s Under 11s cruised to victory in a friendly against an under-strength Tewkesbury at Hill Close this morning.

The home side scored 286 to the visitors’ 203, losing just three wickets along the way.

The Under 11s, who were also missing some regulars, were bolstered by Sam Wilson from the Under 9s and John Darby, who was making his competitive debut for Bredon.

Bredon’s highlights included a wicket from Ben Vicarage (bowled and caught), some cracking deliveries from Euan Styles, and solid battling from Harry Buckley, George Gallagher, Max Murray and Tolly Wilson.

Thanks for the game, Tewkesbury.

Worcester too strong for Bredon Third XI

Worcester were just too strong for Bredon Third XI at Birlingham today.

A powerful display of bowling by the visitors restricted Bredon to 140 for eight.

Bredon started well, with a young Ollie McGrath and his dad, Johnny, forming a solid opening partnership.

Martin Hopkins followed up with some steady batting, there was a debut from Glenn Buckley, and Sean Styles was dismissed by a thunderbolt delivery.

Jacob Clements-Hunt steadied things for a while before Will Rollett struck out boldly in a last-ditch bid to improve Bredon’s runs tally.

Bob Portch wasn’t required to bat or bowl, but did a sterling job in the field and the scorebox.

After the interval (featuring a magnificent tea by Lucy Donovan, see picture below), the home side did their best to pin back Worcester’s batsmen, but they were not to be denied.

Ollie Washbourne claimed a couple of excellent wickets, and there was some strong fielding from Will Wilson.

Captain Derek Ebbage marshalled the field and magnanimously stepped aside from battling and bowling duties to give the side’s younger players some match experience.

Thanks to our opponents for a game played in great spirit.

Score: Bredon 140-8 (45) Worcester 141-2 (21)

It’s Friday, and Bredon’s youngsters are sharpening up for the weekend

The school summer holidays are under way, but there was still a terrific turnout for Bredon’s junior cricket coaching session tonight.

There are two friendlies on Sunday. The Under 11s play Tewkesbury at Hill Close while the Under 12s are away to Alcester and Ragley.

Meanwhile, Bredon’s First XI host Bromyard tomorrow, while the Second XI are away at Bartestree and Lugwardine.

The Third XI host Worcester at Birlingham.

Good luck to all our teams this weekend.
