This wonderful picture of a Bredon Cricket Club team from the Seventies was kindly shared by Beverley Short, whose mum, Pat, was scorer at the club for many years.

Here is the line-up: John Farey (umpire, and father of Mark), Roger Langdon (brother of Nicky Langdon), Nicky Griffiths, Bob Pearson (one of the club’s best all-rounders in the last 60 years), Keith Barthorpe, John Weston, Geoff Hunt, Don Smith, Willy Langdon, Dave Taylor, Roger Washborne and Mark Farey. Don Smith (in blazer) was a legendary club chairman.

What Worcestershire women’s cricket chief said about us

Words of praise for Bredon Cricket Club from Jacci Hunt, Worcestershire women and girls pathway co-ordinator.

Her comments followed the Under 17 Girls match against Buckinghamshire that was played at Hill Close on Sunday and featured our own Rachel Fenney.

Sunday (July 9) will be a proud day for Rachel Fenney, her family and everyone at Bredon Cricket Club.

She will playing a county match for the first time at her home club when Worcestershire Under 17 girls take on Buckinghamshire.

Although she has played for the county for nine years, this will be the first time a county girls match will be hosted at Bredon.

The 45-over game starts at noon at Hill Close.

Last year, also playing against Buckinghamshire, she reached the highest score by a Worcestershire girl in age-group cricket for five years.

Please try to make it along to watch and support Rachel, who is a Second XI and Sunday team regular for Bredon.

Her dad, Ian, also plays for the club, as do her brother, Tim, her uncle, Clive, and her cousin, Dom.

Son catches dad, then dad catches son!

bob portch
Bob Portch: Caught by his son, Henry. But he then returned the favour!

Like father, like son!

There was no intention of revenge when Bob Portch, playing for Bredon Veterans, was caught by his son Henry.

Nevertheless, when it came it must have been sweet.

Bob, who had been battling at nine for the Veterans, said (only slightly begrudgingly): “He caught what was probably the bet shot I’d hit for six years!”

But he didn’t have long to wait before turning the tables.

When it was Henry’s turn to go in to bat, opening as a guest player for the Fossils, guess who caught him? His dad!

Henry, who at 17 years old substantially lowered the average age of the Worcester-based Fossils, had been roped in to play because the side were short of players for their friendly against Bredon Veterans.

One thing’s for sure. Neither he or his dad could be accused of going easy on the opposition!

Well done, Rachel, who has earned herself a scoring record!

Congratulations to Rachel Fenney, who has claimed a record.

On Tuesday she played for Worcestershire Under 17s against Buckinghamshire and scored 93, out of a total of 210.

It was the highest score by a Worcestershire girl in age-group cricket for five years, as well as a personal best for her.

Well done, Rachel. We’re proud of you!
