Chairman’s message to Bredon Cricket Club Tower Run 2017 entrants

We are so looking forward to welcoming entrants to the Bredon Cricket Club Tower Run 2017 tomorrow.

It’s going to be such a good day!

Please arrive at the start by 9.30am at the latest to give yourself time to register and join our Zumba warm up.

Expect sunny spells from 10am and a temperature of about 17C, rising a degree or so over the course of the run. It will be cooler on the summit.

We’d be delighted if you spend some time, and money, at the cricket ground after the finish (proceeds to the club and Midlands Air Ambulance).

We have a barbecue, cake stall and bouncy castle for the younger children.

There will be live Americana music from the Malvern Hillbillies, and our fully licensed bar will be open.

Please share your pictures of the run. Just add the hashtag #TowerRun2017 to your own posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and we’ll find them.

Stay safe, be considerate to other runners, and have fun.

See you tomorrow!

Regards

Neil Hall

Tough going for Under 11s on artificial wicket

It was tough going for the Under 11s on the artificial wicket at Ashton-under-Hill today.

Bowling with very little bounce, the boys nevertheless notched up a 260-225 win against their near neighbours thanks to a combination of patient batting and accurate bowling.

Thirds surprise Taverners with sting in their tail

Wallop! Johnny McGrath with another powerful hit for the Thirds

A sting in the Third XI’s tail was not enough to secure a win against Ombersley Taverners today.

The Thirds, playing through showers at their home ground at Birlingham, posted 163 at the end of their innings.

There was a standout performance from Johnny McGrath, who batting at number nine, unsettled the Taverners by hitting 56 before being caught out on the last ball of the innings.

Ruben Ibbotson also enjoyed a fine spell of bowling, claiming four wickets.

Oliver Washbourne, who bowled eight good overs, also impressed.

Bredon contained several young players (the opposition were all adults), who would have been inspired by the guidance and very vocal encouragement from senior players, in particular, skipper Russell Collins.

Youngsters delighted by All Stars Cricket at Bredon

All Stars Cricket at Bredon Cricket Club
The first session of All Stars Cricket at Bredon gets under way

All Stars Cricket, the new ECB-backed programme of cricket coaching for five to eight-year-olds, got under way at Bredon Cricket Club this afternoon.

More than 20 children turned up for their first lesson in the basics of the game.

It was the third-best attended All Stars session in Worcestershire, a tribute to the club’s growing reputation for the quality of its coaching and friendly welcome.

The All Stars coaching was followed by coaching for the other junior age groups at the club, and it made for a lively evening with dozens of families socialising at our picturesque ground at the foot of Bredon Hill (see video below).

All children attending All Stars receive a backpack of cricket goodies, including a bat, ball, water bottle, personalised shirt and cap to keep.

They will be taught the fundamental skills they need to play, including how to:

  • Catch and throw a ball
  • Hit a moving ball
  • Bowl with a straight arm
  • Play a basic game of cricket
  • Work and communicate as a team
  • Have lots of fun with new friends

All Stars Cricket at Bredon Cricket Club is being led by Tom Walsingham, our DBS-certified new coach.

It is still not too late to sign up for the eight-week programme.

Bookings and payment must be made online at the secure All Stars Cricket site here.

Time is running out to enter the tower run

Time is running out if you want to enter Bredon Cricket Club’s Tower Run!

Online entries to the 10km trail run through some of Worcestershire’s most beautiful countryside close on Sunday (May 21).

The marshalled route begins and ends at the cricket ground and follows pretty country lanes, tracks and paths to the 299m summit of Bredon Hill.

The hilltop is marked by an Iron Age fort and the 18th-century Parson’s Folly tower, and it boasts glorious views of the surrounding countryside.

Entry to the run at 10am on Sunday, May 28, costs £10 and includes a pre-race warm-up led by a qualified Zumba instructor.

Afterwards, participants and their families and friends will enjoy musical entertainment at the club from the Malvern Hillbillies, who specialise in old-time Americana music.

There will also be a barbecue, and the club’s licensed bar will be open. There will be a bouncy castle for younger children.

All entrants receive a finisher’s medal, and there will be trophies for first male finisher, first female finisher and first male and female member of Bredon Cricket Club to finish.

Run organiser Jennie Warren said: “We are delighted by how many people will be joining us for the tower run. It is going to be a fabulous day.

“But anyone still thinking about taking part shouldn’t leave it much longer, because our online entry system closes on Sunday.”

Money raised will go to Bredon Cricket Club and the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

Under 12s bounce back to win by narrow margin

under 11s cricket team
Top team: The Under 12s pictured last season. They’re bigger and better now!

Following defeat in their first game of the season, Bredon Under 12s bounced back with a close victory at Alcester and Ragley Park in a low scoring but very exciting game.

Having been asked to bat first in difficult conditions, Bredon scored 245-6 off their 16 overs.

In reply Alcester and Ragley always appeared to be just ahead, and with their final pair coming to the crease needed six runs to win.

However, Bredon’s bowlers reeled off four tight overs, and, backed up by some top-class fielding, two further wickets were taken and the home side fell three runs short on 242-5.
