Vote to help Bredon Cricket Club get Tesco Bags of Help money

Tesco Bags of Help money will help provide new practice nets at Bredon Cricket Club

Tesco Bags of Help

Bredon Cricket Club are bidding for a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Bredon Cricket Club is one of the groups on the shortlist.

We will use the money from Tesco to renovate our practice nets.

Club chairman Neil Hall said: “Our nets are in a dire state, and are holding back the development of cricket at Bredon.

“A players’ meeting earlier this year decided replacing the nets should be the club’s key goal for the season. So we are delighted and grateful that this funding from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme will help us achieve our goal.

“We are now looking forward to urging the community to get behind us to help us win the maximum £5,000 grant.”

Voting is open in stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

Tesco in Bishop’s Cleeve, near Cheltenham, is taking part and is one of the closest to Bredon. The store at Evesham is also taking part.

Tesco Bags of Help project has already delivered £27 million to more than 3,500 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for March and April. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.

“We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.”

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp

National Village Cup 2017: Bredon meet Harvington in first round

Bredon play Harvington Cricket Club away in the first round of the National Village Cup on Sunday, April 30, following the draw today.

Victory would put us a step closer to playing in the competition’s final at Lord’s, the home of cricket.

Club pays tribute to stalwart Dave Bettridge

Dave Bettridge, Bredon Cricket Club stalwart
Stalwart Dave Bettridge, pictured with his grandson, Alex, has died at the age of 76

It is with great sadness that we have learnt that former Bredon Cricket Club player, umpire, committee member and stalwart Dave Bettridge passed away last Friday aged 76 following a short but cruel illness.

Dave played for the club from the late 1970s and was instrumental in bringing us to our beautiful Westmancote home in 1989.

When he finally hung up his bowling boots Dave would be found on most summer Saturdays on the boundary edge, as passionate about the game as a spectator as he was as a player.

He would also come along on a Friday evenings to proudly watch his grandson be part of the junior practice, and he took great delight in overcoming Dumbleton… even at Under 9s!

Dave will be remembered and sadly missed by all at Bredon Cricket Club.

There will be a private funeral for close family members next week.

On Saturday, March 4, from 2pm in the clubhouse at Hill Close anyone who knew Dave is welcome to join the family and friends to celebrate his life and have a drink in his name.

National Village Cup draw, and Bredon is in it!

National Village Cup final 2015

Clubs across the nation, including Bredon, will battle it out for a place in the National Village Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday, September 17.

You can follow the draw live below on the feed from The Cricketer magazine’s Twitter page on Friday, February 17.

The first round of the competition will be played on Sunday, April 30. Dates for the remaining rounds are here.

The list will be available in full on the nationalvillagecup.com website straight after the draw.

Every year about 300 clubs from villages across the British Isles battle for the chance to play in the final at Lord’s, the home of cricket.

The competition has its origins in a meeting in the committee room at Lord’s.

Aidan Crawley, chairman of the National Cricket Association, looked out of the window and remarked that he had always wanted to see village cricketers play on the hallowed turf.

Ben and Belinda Brocklehurst formed a plan of campaign with The Cricketer.

They agreed what constituted a village, deciding that it should be a “rural community surrounded on all sides by open countryside”.

By the end of the 1971 cricket season, 785 clubs had been divided into 32 regional groups, whose local knock-out competitions would provide the starting point of the inter-group stages and thereafter the national rounds.

This year CricketForce Day will be on Sunday, April 2, at Hill Close.

The hard work begins at 10am, and there will be tea, coffee and bacon rolls to help get you going!
