Bredon’s First claimed their fifth successive win today with victory over Bromyard
The First XI cemented their place at the top of Worcestershire County League’s Division Two today with a home win against Bromyard.
With the hosts posting 263 for 8 in dull, blustery conditions, Bromyard failed to respond, ending the match all out for 152.
It was Bredon’s fifth successive victory (last week’s match against Coombes Wood was rained off, and they are now 11 points clear of second placed Evesham.
A special mention for Kevin Wilkins’s mother-in-law who stepped in at the last minute to provide tea for the teams.
Her efforts was greatly appreciated by the players and tea rota organiser Lucy Washbourne.
Youth and maturity combine to earn Bredon Third XI their first win of the season
After a delayed start due to a heavy storm, Bredon was put in the field.
Tom Ellis had his first match this season and opened the bowling.
Bredon took three early wickets before the heavens opened up once again.
We eventually returned to play 20 minutes later to blue skies and sunshine.
Young William Wilson was given ball on his senior debut (he plays for the Under 13s) and bowled an impressive five-over spell with great control in wet conditions.
At the other end it was Oliver Washbourne’s turn (Under 13s) with his full lighted leg spin.
Oliver, who has proven his position this season in the third team, showed great spin control, causing the batsmen difficulty, and picking up a couple of wickets.
Also on his debut again from the Under 13s, Cole Notley took the ball and, demonstrating his leg spin, beat the bat several times with a solid five-over spell.
Derek Ebbage worked well behind the stumps with the spinners, with many close stumping decisions unfortunately not going our way.
Bromyard ended up 187 for 9 after 40 overs.
Bredon batted after tea to a reduced total and overs, needing 154 off 34 to take their first win of season.
Derek and Anthony Washbourne took to the crease with a great start from Derek, who hit some early fours to keep Bredon above the run rate.
Then it was the turn of Jonathan Thomas, also on his debut.
He soon got into the swing of things, smashing lots of boundaries and racing to his 50.
Bromyard then took control, and with some solid bowling from their youngsters they took several quick wickets.
But Bredon battled on with a gritty innings from Jonathan, who hit the winning run with a few overs to go.
It was a great end to a showery day in a glorious setting with the first win for the Thirds.
Thanks to the youngsters who turned out. It shows the strength coming through the juniors, which is good for the future of the club.
It was also good to see some old Bredon faces, whom I’m sure will have had some tired muscles on Sunday. Well done, guys!
