The sun shone and the barbie sizzled while visitors to Bredon Cricket Club lapped up a fabulous family fun day at the weekend.

A large number turned out to the new-format season curtain-raiser, which replaced the traditional cheese-and-wine evening for the first time this year.

Members and guests were treated to live music from the Kings of the Hill while they enjoyed the spring sunshine and glorious setting of our ground at Hill Close.

The barbecue and ice creams sold out, and there were some concerned faces at the bar as the drinks were downed at a ferocious rate, threatening to leave the cellar empty!

Children enjoyed a bouncy castle and playing on the club’s tenderly cared-for outfield.

Club chairman Neil Hall said he was delighted by the turnout.

“We thought we’d try something different this year, and it has been amazing.

“Along with the tower run (May 27) and Bredon Hill Bash (weekends in August) it is going to become one of our key regular events of the year.”

There’s a new look to Bredon Cricket Club’s season curtain-raiser this year.

Our traditional cheese-and-wine evening is being replaced by an afternoon gathering for all the family that we’re calling the First of the Summer Wine.

There will be food, including a barbecue; activities for youngsters, the club raffle and live music from Joel Darkes (of Lunafall). Our licensed bar will be open throughout.

It is being held on Sunday, May 6, and the fun gets under way at 2pm.

There is an open invitation for people unfamiliar with the club to come along and find out what cricket at Bredon is all about.

Most of our junior team coaches will be at the curtain-raiser too, so parents can ask them about how we introduce youngsters to the game and develop their skills. See also our junior cricket FAQ.

Our chairman, Neil Hall, will be talking to visitors about the season ahead, and the ambitious plans we have to raise playing standards and make the club a hub for all ages in the community.

Cheese and wine evening sets scene for new season

Bredon Cricket Club’s cheese and wine evening started the countdown to the new season at Hill Close.

There was a good turnout in the clubhouse, with people enjoying the last sunshine of a glorious spring day before heading inside for drinks and a superb spread put together by Lucy Washbourne.

The evening is the club’s traditional curtain-raiser to the season. A chance for old friends and new ones to meet, renew their memberships and look to the summer that lies ahead.

The cricket itself gets under way with a home league fixture for the First XI against Lye Cricket Club on April 22.

The Seconds take on Stourport-on-Severn Fourth XI at the Old Elizabethan School on the same day.

The Third XI’s league season starts on Saturday, May 20, when they host Ombersley Taverners at Hill Close.

Spectators are always welcome. All matches start at 1pm.

Dare you run to the tower on the hill?

What a night! This evening’s cheese and wine evening was a fabulous curtain-raiser for the season at Bredon Cricket Club.

It was a chance for old friends to meet up again, and for people new to the club to find out what we are all about.

There was quite a turnout, a delicious buffet and a convivial atmosphere.

Best of all, there was a wide range of ages represented, which is always a sign of a venue that is doing something right!

There is always a warm welcome in our clubhouse. Why not call in to watch some cricket and enjoy a drink?

Apologies to everyone eager to catch up with old friends and hear the latest news about the club at our cheese and wine evening.

The annual social curtain-raiser for the season was to have been held at Hill Close on Saturday (April 16).

Unfortunately, due to some technical problems we have had to delay the event by one week.

It will now be held on Saturday, April 23.

Earlier in the day the first XI will play their first league match of the season at home to Feckenham, so there will be a chance watch some cricket before socialising in the evening.

The cheese and wine begins at 7pm in the clubhouse and includes the 200 Club draw, for which there will be two £100 prizes.

Existing members are invited to come along for a chat and to renew their memberships.

It is also a chance for anyone who is considering joining as either a playing member or social member to meet us, enjoy a drink and find out more about the club.

Our bar, now under the management of Will Rollett, will be open all evening.

There is a map showing you where to find the club here.
